London\u00b4s nasty infernal weather that transpires nothing but asphyxiation and dehydration, unexpectedly forced me to hide in the dark room of the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen in Shoreditch where just the obscure and black leather-driven noise coming out from the amps and a handful of beers could diminish my despise for melting in the streets of Hackney.\u00a0The appointment is with\u00a0Saint Agnes<\/strong>, TSOD\u00b4s<\/strong> well-known rock ‘n’ roll underdogs.<\/p>\n

The last time I saw them was in a cold night of January at the infamous Bar Fly in Camden<\/a>. Uncertain\u00a0of the future and unsigned, the duo just had\u00a0a handful\u00a0of tracks, but lots of attitude, the endangered coolness in rock ‘n’ roll and a mammoth sound that transited between garage and psych. Six months after, the London-based renegades signed to\u00a0Energy Snake\u00a0Records<\/em> while the world is still waiting to discover\u00a0these underrated dissidents.<\/p>\n

Presenting their 7″ debut single (‘Old Bone Rattle’\/’Roadhouse Blues’), the duo composed by Jon Tufnell\u00b4s<\/strong>\u00a0western guitar-driven delirium\u00a0along with\u00a0born-to-be-a-rock-star-with-an-undercut Kitty Austen<\/strong>, still carry the raw essence when they originally crafted their sound in the “horrible streets of Plaistow.” <\/a>Although, the sound developed into\u00a0a more glistened\u00a0and complex pursuit for building nostalgia over sinister\u00a0psych-like and Italo-Western textures.<\/p>\n

Dressed in black and white as a symbol that defines the archetype of Saint Agnes<\/strong>; a badge\u00a0that floats between the saintly and evil as well as the obscure\u00a0and the pure. Guitar riffs a la Jack White <\/strong>while Jon\u00b4s<\/strong> and Kitty\u00b4s<\/strong> vocals define the plot of a\u00a0dark sonic experience:\u00a0crude rock ‘n’ roll passages full of stillness\u00a0that unexpectedly\u00a0become the electric\u00a0soundtrack of an inexistent\u00a0spaghetti western.<\/p>\n

The awful sound in the venue didn\u00b4t matter. A\u00a0handful of newbies on their setlist and their well-known psychedelic rendition to\u00a0The Doors<\/strong> were enough to forget about the nastiness when\u00a0the Celsius scale plays some\u00a0bad tricks. However, ‘Old Bone Rattle’ \u2013 their seminal track and most important statement\u00a0till this date \u2013 is a song that easily summarizes the essence of the\u00a0duo: a dark atmosphere played at unhealthy high levels of volume\u00a0that explodes into a climax of blues-driven riffs and solos blended with\u00a0Saint Agnes\u00b4\u00a0<\/strong>eternal fetish for\u00a0Ennio Morricone <\/strong>and Sergio Leone<\/strong>. All of this,\u00a0beautifully bastardized by a\u00a0garagesque\u00a0keyboard.<\/p>\n

The problem resides that\u00a0with a such brilliant piece of recorded noise, Saint Agnes<\/strong> has a hard mission ahead if they want to surpass their legacy\u00a0beyond\u00a0the greatness of this absolutely essential\u00a0song. Time will tell…<\/p>\n
