I had the chance to see The Kills <\/strong>in two occasions \u2013 sadly, both after their best moment and promoting nothing but their last effort from 2011 that lead them into creative stagnation till these days. My first experience came with\u00a0a massive festival in 2012 where I thought that the stage was too big for Alison Mosshart\u00b4s<\/strong> sexual attitude and dirty vocals that didn\u00b4t blend well with Jamie Hince\u00b4s<\/strong> dissonant guitar in a colossal stage.<\/p>\n

Dirty music always sound better in small shitholes, so 2 years after my first experience, here I am at a packed small venue for my second opportunity. And despite my perception improved, The Kills<\/strong> still can\u00b4t satisfy me. Almost four years without new material, an indulgent Mexican crowd in their pockets that claps and shouts with every single movement from the band without judging the deficient sound coming out from the speakers and a polished setlist that forget the old stuff certainly didn\u00b4t help. But, oh, Alison<\/strong>\u2026.<\/p>\n

Maybe I\u00b4m viciously and perversely obsessed with Alison Mosshart<\/strong> when she\u00b4s on stage, but maybe I don\u00b4t really like The Kills<\/strong>? Maybe they are overrated? Or I just had bad luck in those two opportunities? Maybe we are so in love with them because there\u00b4s a quasi sex symbol and fashion icon playing rock \u2018n\u2019 roll next to Kate Moss\u00b4<\/strong> husband? Or maybe I don\u00b4t really enjoy their current setlist and their two last albums? Yes, that\u00b4s the problem. In 18 songs, they just miserly threw 4 tracks from the early stuff \u2013 their best songs to date and when my fetishistic obsession with Mosshart<\/strong> started. They are certainly not promoting a new album, so why not to play a democratic setlist? But, oh, Alison<\/strong>\u2026.<\/p>\n

The Kills<\/strong> from 2003 to 2007 was a kick ass act with brilliant songs. The sound was raw and perverse \u2013 a refreshment towards the clean, polished and over produced sound from the majority of their contemporaries. Well thought references and tributes to\u00a0The Velvet Underground, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Sonic Youth<\/strong>\u00a0and other references to post-punk, garage and lo-fi lunatic pioneers, was enough for me to find them suitable to my sonic perversions. And then Alison Mosshart\u00b4s<\/strong>\u2026 well\u2026enough said. But then, Midnight Boom<\/em> (2008) came and I step away.<\/p>\n

Yesterday they came back to Mexico City \u2013 a place that always received them with honors since 2005 \u2013 leaving behind the drum machine and accompanied by two stand-up drummers dressed in black simulating The Velvets\u00b4<\/strong> or The Jesus And Mary Chain\u00b4s<\/strong> style. Behind Jamie<\/strong> and Alison<\/strong> just a leopard print. In front of them, a lustful crowd anxious for listening their messy (but polished) sound while\u00a0breathing the heartwarming effects of cannabis and analyzing Mosshart\u00b4s<\/strong>\u00a0rock ‘n’ roll snobbery next to\u00a0Jamie\u00b4s<\/strong> dissonance.<\/p>\n

So here we have an acapella version of \u201cM.E.X.I.C.O\u201d that lead into \u201cU.R.A. Fever\u201d \u2013 the closest we will listen to The Kills <\/strong>rapping \u2013 \u201cFuture Starts So Slow\u201d and \u201cHeart Is A Beating Drum\u201d that suffered from the worst sound deficiencies of the night. That didn\u00b4t matter to the greater part of the crowd cause Alison Mosshart<\/strong> already had the it\u00a0in her pocket \u2013 with those perverse and catatonic movements it\u00b4s difficult not to enter into her claws.<\/p>\n

‘Finally they are gonna play the early stuff, the sound that I like’<\/em>, I thought when I listen to the first chords of \u201cKissy Kissy\u201d, a desert highway-like druggy track from their debut\u00a0album. But then again, back to Blood Pressures<\/em> (2011) with \u201cSatellite\u201d, \u201cDNA\u201d and \u201cBaby Says\u201d, which they\u00b4re not bad, but they are not getting even closer to other greats like \u201cLove Is A Deserter\u201d, “Superstition”, \u201cThe Good Ones\u201d, “Cat Claw”, “I Hate The Way You Love\u201d, “Sweet Cloud”, “Murdermile” \u201cPull A U\u201d or a handful of gems presented as B-sides. Why not to play some of those songs?<\/p>\n
