We don\u2019t play happy music. We haven\u2019t got an easy life, and music is the only thing that helped us\u201d, says <strong>Ars\u00e8ne Welkin<\/strong>, guitarist and vocalist of <strong>Thee Maximators<\/strong> \u2013 a French duo of distorted and lo-fi hysteria that comes from the isolated\u00a0streets of\u00a0Bourges, but that found rest in Paris or as they call it, &#8220;a jungle of dreams.&#8221;\u00a0Signed by the spectacular, <a href=\"http:\/\/blacktotemrecords.bandcamp.com\/\"><em>Black Totem Records<\/em><\/a>, this couple seems to be part of a counterculture movement in the city of the Seine and beyond that shouts out loud their boredom towards society. Just watch this disturbing\u00a0video and you will know what they mean.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/grL3KnNq1dQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ars\u00e8ne<\/strong>\u00a0is one of those tormented\u00a0souls who truthfully believes that \u201cgood songs come from pain\u201d and real sincerity, but not from any vestige of enjoyment. He\u00a0seems to be quite a a character: Just with 20 miserable years of existence, he\u00b4s a multi-instrumentist and a <a href=\"http:\/\/arsenewelkin.tumblr.com\">painter<\/a> in charge of the band\u00b4s nasty\u00a0artwork and other sinister pieces\u00a0\u2013 \u00a0he praises himself as\u00a0<strong>Matisse\u00b4s<\/strong> secret son. But there\u00b4s even more in the afflicted\u00a0mind of this french teen:\u00a0he is the\u00a0frontman of<strong> Thee Maximators. <\/strong>He has a\u00a0\u00a0solo project called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/trashbloomband\"><strong>Trash Bloom <\/strong><\/a>and he\u00b4s\u00a0 the founder of <em>Black Totem Records<\/em>, a French label\u00a0with the brilliant\u00a0philosophy of\u00a0reviving rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll\u00b4s viciousness.\u00a0Is it relevant to mention that he\u00a0hates police and\u00a0the\u00a0law more than anything? But who doesn\u00b4t?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SR6seYSAH7o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beyond their pessimistic sound, the story of <strong>Thee Maximators<\/strong> seems to be the classic story of a rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll band. <strong>Hugo<\/strong> (drums) and <strong>Ars\u00e8ne<\/strong>\u00a0met at an early age and the relationship between this duo developed through\u00a0rock n roll clich\u00e9s: \u201cwe discovered women and drugs together. <strong>Hugo<\/strong> played drums and I played guitar, so we started this project when we were 17\u201d, says\u00a0<strong>Ars\u00e8ne.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a name inspired by a cheap beer when they were younger and without any money, these guys were touched by the sensual claws of\u00a0autodestruction and a fucked-up lifestyle, but still,\u00a0without even playing a chord: \u201cYou know, Maximator\u00b4s the beer in France with more alcohol, around 11,6%, and just with 2 you\u2019re fucked up. In a year we drunk it all the time \u2013 maybe around \u00a0300 beers. We just wanted to get high for a cheap price and to\u00a0escape the desperate feeling of this little boring city\u201d, proudly recalls,\u00a0<strong>Ars\u00e8ne.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And instead of recalling the infernal sound from the godfathers of madness personified in psych and\u00a0garage, they took as an influence, revival bands:\u00a0\u201cat the beginning, we were very influenced by <strong>Thee Oh Sees<\/strong> and <strong>Thee Vicars<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0our favorites bands at this time \u2013 that\u2019s why took the \u00abThee\u00bb in our name. It was also because of <strong>Billy Childish<\/strong> that we love so much (<strong>Thee Milkshakes, Thee Headcoast<\/strong>).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite they\u00a0describe their sound as\u00a0\u201cheavy melancholic stuff and grungy&#8221;, they still have their doubts when they need to recall a specific genre:\u00a0\u201cHum, it\u2019s really difficult to do it. When we described ourselves playing garage or psych, i don\u2019t know if it\u2019s really true, for sure we are in this big family of music, I guess, but when i write song, i really don\u2019t care about sounding like any other band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do they feel part of a\u00a0scene that kills south korean clowns and twerking teens?\u00a0\u201cTo be sincerely, I don\u2019t recognize myself in the actual scene. I think a lot of bands play music just to be cool and hype, and they are copy of copy of copy of the Californian scene [whatever he meant with the Californian scene.]&#8221; But if you push <strong>Ars\u00e8ne<\/strong>\u00a0a bit, he will give you another answer: &#8220;Recently we heard about a lot of bands in England, where there is a grunge revival, I think we\u2019re near this scene,\u00a0 but we don\u2019t want to be as <strong>Kurt Cobain<\/strong>.&#8221; Any names? &#8220;We really like <strong>Slim Customers<\/strong> [signed by his own label], who are really sick on stage! We also have an\u00a0EP called <em>God Raped Me <\/em>[sweet] last year and we are\u00a0on a compilation from <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/d-sob-issance-fanzine\"><em>D\u00e9sobeissance Records<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/retardrecords.bandcamp.com\/\"><em>Retard Records<\/em><\/a>, from France too. But now, the goal\u00a0is to record our first album in July, with our new sound engineer, <strong>Pierre Dessauny<\/strong>. It will have a\u00a0huge sound, and of course it will be out on <em>Black Totem Record<\/em>s on vinyl.\u00a0I think it will be out on October.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beyond the infernal sound of <strong>Thee Maximators<\/strong> hidden between druggy guitars that transit between surf, psych, garage and grunge with incomprehensible vocals and drumming madness, his comments on French record labels brought the opportunity to really know what\u00b4s going on in the country of <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #545454;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Serge Gainsbourg <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #545454;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #545454;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Brigitte Bardot<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0where it seems to be lots of \u00a0pissed off bands looking ugly and sounding angry: &#8220;A lot of things going on in France. [Labes like]\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/retardrecords.bandcamp.com\/\"><em>Retard Records <\/em><\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.howlinbananarecords.com\/\"><em>Howlin Banana Records<\/em><\/a>, we helped each other, and this is creating good connections to play all around France. The scene is growing up really seriously&#8221;, positively confirms my\u00a0suspicions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Psych, garage, grunge, lo-fi? Altogether? It doesn\u00b4t matter. Just listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/theemaximators1.bandcamp.com\/\"><strong>Thee Maximators<\/strong> <\/a>and the catalogue of <em>Black Totem Records<\/em> to understand that music is not about genres, but about telling relevant stories.
