“We’re just a bunch of fucking weirdos you wouldn’t let anywhere near your kids”, says Chris O-C<\/strong> (organ\/synth keys\/backing vocals) from Phobophobes<\/strong> \u2013 an outrageous and perverse gang of reverberating misery and decadent but endangered coolness. Certainly, one of the hidden and underrated gems in Britain’s “barren” music scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Most people consider us ‘psych’ but I think it’s more early-80s post-punk. Who cares”, states\u00a0our insider in the band. And it\u00b4s true. Who cares? In Phobophobes<\/strong> what matter\u00b4s the message: hate and indifference overlapped in beautiful textures of creepy noises and spooky\u00a0voices. We can talk about garage, psych, and post-punk but Phobophobes<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 looking (and sounding) like they will not make it for tomorrow \u2013 brings a mixture of torment\u00a0and human degeneration\u00a0immortalized in recorded noise and sinister\u00a0shows.<\/span><\/p>\n

Composed by five (occasionally\u00a0six) members,\u00a0Phobophobes <\/strong>has some headmasters\u00a0that shaped this syndicate of madness: “lots of influences, like Suicide<\/strong>, some Iranian psych guy called Kourosh<\/strong>-something from the 70s, and old South American bands like Los Saicos <\/strong>and Los Yorks<\/strong>\u201d. Surprisingly, they have idols too: \u201cLeila Khaled<\/strong>, the guy from Suicide<\/strong>, The man Dan Lyons<\/strong>” and another miserable, decadent but genius called Diego Armando Maradona.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Phobophobes\"<\/span><\/a>\u201cNone of us really like the name Phobophobes<\/strong>, but, as is the nature of a phobophobe, we are too scared to change it to anything else\u201d, recalls\u00a0Chris<\/strong>,\u00a0and it seems that they may have a point regarding such a\u00a0bizarre and phobic band name. The sound coming out of the speakers is truly perverse\u00a0and full of horror-like textures reminiscent of a B movie from Ed Wood<\/strong> or another wacko with similar intentions \u2013 maybe a step forward when thinking in The Cramps\u00b4<\/strong> fascination with horror and kitsch.\u201cI think parts of our music sounds like it’s from a George Romero<\/strong> film or something. It’s sleazy\/perverse”, proudly says Chris<\/strong>, who also hints the inspiration of their disgusting and perverse image that seems to work as an album cover: “It is a still from H\u00e4xan – Witchcraft Through The Ages<\/em>; a silent movie by\u00a0Benjamin Christensen<\/strong> made in 1922 that\u00a0had a remake in the 60’s with a jazz score and narrated by William S. Borroughs.<\/strong>” It is unquestionably, a disturbing image.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ragged clothes; cheap, filthy\u00a0shoes; an\u00a0I don\u00b4t give a fuck <\/em>approach, and a mammoth sound. Who the fuck are these guys that look like\u00a0they escape from a mental hospital just a couple of hours ago? And from where they obtain this incredible sound?
