The psychedelic rock n\u00b4 roll duo<a href=\"\/?p=2202\"> <b>Saint Agnes<\/b><\/a>, with a name <i>\u201cinspired by a town in Devon\u201d,<\/i> as an archetype between chastity and profanity, is a proof of that. With a brilliant EP recorded in <b>Kitty Austen\u00b4s<\/b> (vocals, guitar and keyboards) bedroom in <i>\u201cthe horrible streets of Plaistow, the real east London\u201d <\/i>and waiting for a record label to the rescue, this band is a worthy rock n\u00b4 roll revival with a colossal sound. \u201c<b>Ennio Morricone\u00b4s<\/b> rock n\u00b4roll\u201d is how they described themselves before and they might not be wrong if you think of spaghetti western soundtracks overlapped with\u00a0American\u00b4s cowboy-desert sound fuelled with heavy drugged, psychedelic passages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u201cIn a lot of the London bands everyone wants to be super cool and they are not really caring\u201d,<\/i> says <b>Jon Tufnell<\/b>, guitarist and vocalist of <b>Saint Agnes<\/b> while drinking a pint of ale next to <b>Kitty <\/b>in a noisy pub in Hampstead. <i>\u201cI don\u2019t understand why the indie scene is getting popular. There are no good songs and they are so clean. It kills everything. We are anti clean, we a genuine partnership. Our sound is very lo-key, super unprofessional, very DIY.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite their young age, <b>Jon Tufnell <\/b>and <b>Kitty Austen\u00b4s<\/b> career in rock music has been long already. Coming from bands like <b>Lola Colt <\/b>and<b> The Lost Souls Club<\/b> respectively, the pair met after <b>Jon <\/b>auditioned for <b>Kitty\u00b4s<\/b> band a couple of years ago. \u201c<i>We met and we just played guitar without knowing how it would sound like. By the end of the first evening we recorded a full song called \u201cTower Falls\u201d and we became a band<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Kitty<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> recalls with the same feeling and drinks a pint with a smile on her face: \u201c<\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">it felt really different to all the other London bands around at the moment. It was a liberating thing cause in the other band I just play keyboards and for me, it was refreshing not to be on the background anymore.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Their musical knowledge is broad and well studied: \u201c<b><i>BRMC, <\/i><\/b><i>the guitar sound of<b> The Raveonettes <\/b>and<b> Fleetwood Mac\u00b4s<\/b> well written pop songs but with the spirit of rock n roll\u201d <\/i>are just some sort of inspirations, but the truth is that <b>Saint Agnes <\/b>absorbs ideas rather than specific sounds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CTrQRd32z4Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i><\/i><i>\u201cWe both love <b>Hendrix, The Who<\/b> and<b> Led Zeppelin<\/b>. We like guitar solos, we like crazy noises. <b>Kitty<\/b> likes the sound of keyboards in <b>Deep Purple <\/b>and<b> The Doors<\/b> but I think we are not influenced directly by some specific bands. I grew up loving <b>Van Halen,<\/b> but we sound nothing like <b>Van Halen<\/b> but that must have made an impression on my guitar playing somewhere. The influence is more on the songwriting, in the spirit of not overthinking, on being quick. For example we love what <b>Jack White<\/b> is doing with that kind of spirit.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Kitty <\/b>listens carefully and adds sharp details to the conversation: \u201c<i>Influences out of music are definitely films; Spaghetti westerns, literature, and poetry. We love the old way of making movies that are full of space and full of stillness and we like to have those dramatic moments with lots of space in our music.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thesenseofdoubt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/558274_10151832382880683_308552702_n.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2483 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thesenseofdoubt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/558274_10151832382880683_308552702_n-300x202.jpg?resize=300%2C202\" alt=\"SAINT AGNES\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i><\/i><b>Saint Agnes<\/b> is fully prepared, loaded and ready to attack the rock scene. Songs like the Tarantino-like \u201cThe Good Fight\u201d, the surfy \u201cDrown Me In A River\u201d, a druggy and schizophrenic version of\u00a0<b>The Doors<\/b>\u00a0in \u201cRoundhouse Blues\u201d and the anthem-to-be \u201cOld Bonne Rattle\u201d, proves the quality of these two renegades, but as in many cases, the industry and justice has not been kind as they are currently struggling in search of a deal. They have been exiled and they truly deserve attention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u201cEvery band I been has been DIY all the way but I am aware that they are limits within the industry without a record label\u201d,<\/i> says <b>Jon<\/b>. <i>\u201cWe keep writing and doing some gigs; we have new songs.
